Chapter Fifteen
Hey Nora,â Tomás yelled out. âNeed help?â
Gabe stilled. He hadnât seen Nora since the day of the farmerâs market. Heâd spent the last few days not really avoiding her, but also not really trying to find her.
His dad was home from the hospital and Gabe had been preoccupied to say the least. Doctors had said heâd been dehydrated and his body had been fighting off some sort of virus. An appointment with his oncologist later that month would hopefully provide some answers to the questions all of them now had.
Of course, his dad had ordered that everythingâand everyoneâremain business as usual. And that people needed to stop asking how he was feeling.
For Gabe, his dadâs illness was a wake-up call. Cruz had said he didnât want him to take on more responsibilities out of obligation. That didnât mean Gabe was going to listen. If anything, he was determined to find ways to bring in new revenue for the ranch.
He already had come up with one possibility. But it involved Nora, which meant he had to talk to her. It wasnât lost on him that she hadnât been going out of her way to talk to him either.
It was obvious that they both knew what had almost happened there at the creek. He had wanted to kiss Nora. And sheâd made it clear she didnât want to kiss him.
Maybe heâd imagined the mutual attraction?
That meant that Gabe had to make things okay between them. He didnât want to scare her off, or worse, give her a new reason to dislike him. He couldnât hide from her anymore.
Gabe took a deep breath and turned to see Nora walking toward them. He and Tomás were just about to head into the stable so they could get a stall ready for a new boarder. His breath caught in his throat at seeing her again. Flashes of images from that afternoon rushed into his mind. The way sheâd jumped into the creek fully clothed to save him even though he hadnât needed saving. The way sheâd grabbed his hand as he told her about the accident, somehow knowing heâd needed something to hold on to to get him through the memory. The way she looked at him with those big brown eyes of hers and how he couldnât help but get lost in them.
âHey, Gabe,â she said softly, giving him a hesitant smile.
âHi Nora,â he replied.
âCruz said you were delivering the pumpkins today,â Tomás said. âI can go with you if you want?â
âI can go,â Gabe offered. He needed to get Nora alone so they could talk.
âThatâs okay,â she rushed to say. âI can handle it.â
âIâm sure you can. But Tomás here was about to make me clean stalls. Please let me go help you instead.â
He ignored the questioning looks from his brother, who could obviously tell something else was going on. Luckily for him, Tomás knew when to keep his mouth shut.
âFine,â Nora said. âLetâs go.â
It wasnât until they were both in the
